Bodmin Wigglers in Action at Marvels Charity Festival

The morning greeted the Wigglers with damp skies as they arrived at the Marvels Charity Netball Festival at Penrice. With five eight-minute matches ahead and Hosky’s nails freshly painted in honour of the event, the team wasted no time getting stuck into their warm-up for the day’s opening game.

Bodmin Wigglers v Marvels Squad

The opening match saw the Bodmin Wigglers face a young, athletic Marvels Squad—who burst onto the court with impressive speed and agility. Annie took the first centre pass, sparking a flurry of movement as the Marvels darted from one end of the court to the other. But our tenacious defenders, Trudi (WD) and Angie (GD), stuck to them like glue. With Sharon commanding the goal circle as GK, the Marvels struggled to convert chances.

Our defence rallied, sending the ball back up the court into the capable hands of centre Annie and Hosky (WA). Despite just three weeks of training, Lara stepped up to the challenge as GA, and—with steadfast support from our powerhouse Nikki (GS) —soon found her rhythm and the net.

Final Score: Bodmin Wigglers 5 – Marvels Squad 4

Bodmin Wigglers v Marvels Crew

With a win in the first match and a sufficient top-up of sugar, it was time to take on the second Marvels team in the competition, the Marvels Crew.  Some changes to the Wigglers saw Tania come on as WD and Carol as WA with Trudi taking up position in centre.

After the speed of the first game, we were anticipating much of the same. Although the pace was brisk, the experience and control of the Wigglers saw us take an early lead thanks to excellent teamwork between Nikki our GS and GA Lara.

Final Score:  Bodmin Wigglers 4  – Marvels Crew 0

Bodmin Wigglers v Plymouth Warriors

Our next match saw us competing against the Plymouth Warriors, who we had been successful against during the recent Plymouth tournament. This game saw Annie back as centre and Sally taking up the position of WA.  A spirited defence from the Plymouth Warriors ensured that our shots at goal were limited despite the best efforts of our shooters. Down the other end of the court, our defenders Angie (GD), Tania (W) and Sharon (GK)  applied constant pressure when the Warriors were on the offensive. With more than a few decisions going against us, the Wigglers found themselves on the wrong side of the result.

Final Score:  Bodmin Wigglers 1 – Plymouth Warriors 4

Bodmin Wigglers v Newquay Seagals

Fresh from a morale-boosting tombola triumph, the Bodmin Wigglers returned to the court for their next match against the Newquay Seagals. Carol was back on as WD with Hosky in centre and Annie moving to WA.  The Wigglers looked in control from the start and with Lara and Nikki firing on all cylinders, the goals kept coming ensuring victory for the Wigglers.

Final Score: Bodmin Wigglers 7 – Newquay Seagals 1

Bodmin Wigglers v Red Choughs

With only the Red Choughs left to play, the Wigglers needed a win to be in with a chance of tournament glory.  Struggling to keep possession, our hopes were further derailed by the Red Choughs’ towering GS, who was dropping the balls in the net with ease.  Our strong and resilient Angie (GD) and Sharon (GK) were valiant in their defence within the circle, but the height mismatch ultimately took its toll.

Final Score: Bodmin Wigglers 3 – Red Choughs 8

As the final whistle blew on a morning of Walking Netball, the Plymouth Warriors were crowned tournament champions. The Bodmin Wigglers secured a proud 3rd place finish, narrowly missing out on second spot to the Marvels Squad on goal difference—proof of just how close the contest really was.

While the results mattered, it was the experience that made the day unforgettable. From laughs on the sidelines to a sweet-fuelled energy boost, the Wigglers brought spirit, camaraderie, and plenty of memorable moments.

A heartfelt congratulations to the Marvels for hosting a fantastic event in support of Cornwall Hospice. The atmosphere was one of joy, generosity, and sporting fun—a day that reminded everyone why netball is more than just a game.
