Wigglers Meet Newquay Seagals for a Friendly Match

Match Report by Carol Hoskin

On a very wet and windy Monday the Wigglers travelled to Newquay to play the Seagals. The first challenge was to find a parking space on the same evening as parents evening!

Sharon was a fabulous organiser, sorting positions for the team:

Sharon – GK
Mary – GD
Susan – GD
Trudi – C
Trina – WA
Lara – GA
Beth – GS

I chatted with Lyn before the match who told me The Seagals recently had a recruitment drive and now have 30 players on their books, 14 of them showed up tonight to play against us.
This was the start of the Wigglers next challenge, we had the bare bones and no reserves.

Wigglers took the first centre pass and off we went… sadly not in our favour, within a few minutes we were 2 nil down, however with some great play Beth scored one of many absolute stonkers of a goal.
The match was very quick and at times a little messy, both teams being pulled up for various misdemeanors….
The Seagals new recruits were trying hard as was our Susan in her first match.
At the end of the first 1/4 we were 9-5 down. Beth and Lara played well together being fed some quick passes into the circle by Trina and Trudi.

The second quarter was again a little scrappy on both sides and we hit the hoop several times before finally gaining another 6 goals, popping us into the lead 11-9.

3rd quarter and the Seagals swapped their squad and put on the ol’ faithfuls, resulting in a very close score in our favour 16 -15. Sharon, Mary and Susan all worked hard in defence in end to end match play.

Going into the last quarter Sharon made a few tactical changes… Beth moved to GA, Lara GD and Sharon GS, Mary GK.

Great move by Cpt Sharon now partnering Beth who was ‘on form’. The team worked hard together and they soon began to pull the score back. Sharon scored another 5 goals giving us a well deserved draw 22 – 22.

Squeaky bum time at the end, watching the countdown timer with 10 seconds to go, Sharon caught the ball and scored an absolute corker! Trina and Trudi covered a lot of ground throughout the match and although the ref did whistle for running she allowed a lot to go undetected!

Well done to you all, not easy to play 40 minutes without reserves but you did the Wigglers proud.
